The true life story of Michael Elihu Colby and his childhood days at Manhattan's Algonquin Hotel. His grandparents Mary and Ben B. Bodne had traded their Southern oil fortune for the legendary but faded Algonquin and restored the hotel's former glory. Their efforts led to a remarkable renaissance and attracted an overflow of celebrities from the ridiculous to the sublime. Michael weaves a vivid tapestry of encounters with glittering Broadway and Hollywood celebrities in a kaleidoscopic memoir of illustrious figures - some on a meteoric rise, some in tragic decline - while he found his own place in the topsy-turvy world of Broadway theater and musicals.

The Algonquin Kid Adventures Growing Up at New York Legendary Hotel (Audible Audio Edition) Michael Elihu Colby BearManor Media Books

When I used to watch The Johnny Carson Show, I used to roll my eyes as he attributed great friendships to most of his guests. After reading MIchael Colby's wonderful book, I understand how so many enduring friendships in the entertainment industry can be forged.
Michael grew up mostly in The Algonquin Hotel, which was owned by his grandparents. He met or knew almost every luminary in the world of theater, movies and literature, since most of them stayed in The Algonquin when in NY.
He will regale you with stories about legends like Marilyn Monroe, Robert Kennedy and Frank Sinatra, and countless others. I'm not going to describe those encounters. You should read about them yourself.
Two of the most delightful things about Michael Colby are his loyalty and decency. He is also a playwright and lyricist. When he was offered a Broadway production of his show "Charlotte Sweet" (which I saw and loved), he declined the offer because it would have meant replacing his beloved creatives and actors. You don't see that kind of loyalty often and when you do, it is to be admired. You also won't find a snarky word about anyone in his book, and after you read all his stories, you know he left out anything remotely unflattering by choice.
What Michael doesn't talk about, and what I know to be true, since we've been friends for almost 35 years, is how supportive his is of all of his friends. I produced a show I know he didn't like. He came to see it as a showcase, and he came back when it was done off-Broadway. And if he didn't know that I wanted him to tell me the truth about what he thought, he would have said something very nice and left it at that.
I loved this book, but more than the book, I love Michael Colby.

The Algonquin Kid Adventures Growing Up at New York Legendary Hotel (Audible Audio Edition) Michael Elihu Colby BearManor Media Books Reviews

A unique story about a life lived in a legendary hotel. Told with style and flourish. A lot of celebrity name dropping......but oh, the names! A fun and delightful read.
How fabulous ..... New York & The Algonquin as I recall them from my salad days at The New York Times, just down the street!!
Colby's autobiography is a swift and compelling read. While The Algonquin Kid provides a great history of modern musical theater, it is the lively anecdotes that make this a page turner. And this is not merely the story of Broadway and New York musical theater as intimate stories about Ella Fitzgerald, May Angelou, Robert F Kennedy, and other American icons leap from the pages. A great read.
This was a pretty good book, but got dull in places. There was a lot of "name dropping" of celebrities.
This was a decent book. It, of course, had a lot of name dropping but I expected that. It wasn't quite as good as the one written by Auntie Mame's nephew, but a good book nevertheless. I would recommend it.
This is a funny book loaded with information only available to an Algonquin insider. Michael Colby, grandson of deceased Algonquin owners Ben and Mary Bodne, tells a story that of interest to anyone into New York theater history. (Folks interested in colorful, dysfunctional Jewish family dynamics may also find the book interesting, even if they're not theater buffs.) What Michael saw growing up at the legendary Algonquin Hotel was not only New York history, but American cultural history. He writes the book in a way that weaves fascinating stories of the world's theatrical giants with his own poignant family history. This is an informative and fun read.
As a fan of theater, we're accustomed to stories about composers, shows, and theaters. The Algonquin Kid by Michael Colby provides a unique perspective of one of the hang-outs of playrights, composers, performers and glitterati. And it's not just from an outsider It's from the perspective of the young grandson of the owner of the Algonquin Hotel. The book is liberally peppered with anecdotes and photographs and celebrities famous (the Kennedys, Marilyn Monroe, etc) and the not so famous. A great read and a nice gift for the theater geek in your family.
