This is not your typical feel-good Amish fiction. It attempts to explore what can happen if the "man is head of the household; women should be submissive" is taken to an extreme. Some men in the series are abusive toward their wives. There is a tendency to not tell others (even the church leadership) when this happens. Unfortunately, I did not find the characters very compelling, so it didn't draw me into the story, though I do admire the author for tackling such tough subjects.

Abuse happens in all cultures. This book addresses it honestly. I am glad that she does mention that wives can be abusers as well. God wants husband to care about & care for their wives. Women are to be submissive, but men who cherish & love their wives don't dominate them. This book is good for your teens to know the warning signs.
I liked that the book was long enough to get the details of what the book was all about and not just a summery, a story line or like a book report. that is one reason I gave 5 stars. Another reason is that it pulls you in and makes you feel you are there and a part of what is happening. ladies if you are in simular circumstances get help quick. you are enabling and making it harder for him to mend his ways. this book I feel will be an eye opener and can be the means of a strong and healthy family bond. I loved in the same situation for many years. A wonderful book. we need more like it. I am starting the next book tonight. thank you for the opportunity to read this book for free.
This was the only freebie that wasn't suspenseful, horror based or Sci-Fi, so I chose it. Normally I like reading about other cultures or historical books, but I found the writing in this story very amateurish. It seemed like perhaps it should have had an age related suggestion such as 12-15 yrs old. Perhaps there was and I didn't notice it. The dialogue seemed stilted and the overuse of the language of the Amish made the conversations seem not normal. I slogged through to the end, only because it was so short, but have no interest in any of the follow up books.
While I've read many Amish books and several different author's, I felt like this book was written for a 10 year old. The entire book felt like the author was writing a children's book addressing physical abuse in an Amish marriage and community. While I'm sure this probably happens, I had a hard time with the whole story.
I have read other books by Rachel Stoltzfus and did not have this issue. It will be a while before I read another book by her.
Amish Truth be Told by Rachel Stoltzfus
This book as you read opens up some awful things that people never realize has been happening in a Amish community. The Amish are such a quiet group of people that you would never think something like this would ever be happening.
In the Englishers world it happens more times then you want to count, but in the Amish world to us it has been unheard of.
When you read this book take it slow an take into you mind what the leaders of this community are teaching you how this happens and how they go about it on their own to start with the family an show them that this should not be going on that Women are just as capable of working away from the family to help taking care to see along with the husband or the head of the home without taking away who really in in charge of the family. Husband in this community was under the impression that if a wife or daughter was going against the rules by working away from the home.
Enjoy reading this book an learning, then go on to the next book, in fact there are two books that you are going to need to read and find out what was going on in some of the families an how much needed help was needed to make life for everyone to be safe an happy.
I am now going to ask that you send a message to the author an let her know what you thought of her book and then also make a review on or what ever site you are happy with making it, If you know of any one in you life that is going threw what these women went threw ask them to read this book or find someone that they really trust an talk to that person so that something bad doesn't end up going really bad.
This book deals with sexism and domestic violence in the Amish community of Peace Valley. While I am sure that these issues exist in all places where men and women live together, this book really didn't seem very believable to me. From reading books about the Amish from Beverly Lewis and other authors, I was under the impression that several things discussed in this book wouldn't be true to Amish beliefs. In one place, there was a discussion where the wife told the abusive husband that she would call the police if he continued to intimidate and threaten her. In another scene, an adult character was discussing with a group of girls who they were dating, which, according to other books, just doesn't happen, because courting is done in secret. And I don't know if a young girl would be asked to write a paper about the differences between Amish and English, and that paper having to do with sexism.

Although this book does deal with a serious issue, and I applaud the author for that, I just can't give it more than three stars because the circumstances weren't believable.
I found this book very difficult to follow. There were a lot of mistakes regarding the characters and who said what and who was dating who. The daughter, Naomi, was dating Vernon and then half-way through the book, they started saying Jethro was her boyfriend. Naomi's friend Leora was dating Jethro and then half-way through the book, they had her paired with Vernon. There were a number of other instances where one character was named when they really meant another character. The premise of the story itself would have been a good read if not for all this confusing of the characters.
This is not your typical feel-good Amish fiction. It attempts to explore what can happen if the "man is head of the household; women should be submissive" is taken to an extreme. Some men in the series are abusive toward their wives. There is a tendency to not tell others (even the church leadership) when this happens.
