English history is the story of a people who first settled an island off the coast of continental Europe thousands of years ago and went on to rule most of the known world. This fascinating book spans centuries and shows how people like Richard the Lionheart and Elizabeth I and events such as the Norman Conquest and the defeat of the Spanish Armada shaped not just Britain but the world as we know it.

England A History eBook R J White

It's a good simplified overview for a beginner to the subject. Especially interesting to me was the opinion of the author that the American Revolution was really another of the continuing wars between England and France rather than a defeat by "untrained farmers." If you are looking for an in-depth history of England you will be disappointed, but it's a good starting place for a beginner.

England A History eBook R J White Reviews

This brief history of England was interesting and highlighted the focal points of a glorious history that brought us the wonderful Anglo-Saxon language, the King James bible, and the outstanding Patriots that gave us the Declaration of Independence, The Constitution with the Bill of Rights, and America--the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave!
I found it very informative and learn things I hadn't read before. If you are interested in English history this is a good place to start.
This was terrific. A very readable history that moves along with the important milestones. A perfect starter for the traveler who wants to tour the English countryside and wants an overview on the place.
Although other books may provide more details this one provides a nice summary and notes the significance and impact of key events and players along the way. Good introduction to English history!
I bought this book after a friend told me that much of the HBO series Game of Thrones is based on English history. After reading it, I found the real Game of Thrones to be (almost) as fascinating as the fictional one.

This book tells England’s story from the days of the Romans to the Tudors and World War II. It is concise and well-written and doesn’t get bogged down in irrelevant detail.

I’ve recommended the book to several friends, one of whom was just back from London and enjoyed it as much as I did.
There is much to recommend R. J. White’s succinct history of England. It is well-written and fast-paced and makes clear how England helped shape the world as we know it today. The author doesn’t leave me guessing at the relevance of events; he is direct and explicit.

For example, White writes that “the Norman Conquest was a positive achievement. A strong monarchy, a proud aristocracy, a purified church, a vigorous urban life, and a language fit to take its place among the literary tongues of Europe All these and much more came as a result of the Conquest, launching the country on a Continental course while yet preserving all that was best in the island on the edge of the world.”

Anyone who enjoys a good history will like this book.
I read this book the way it was written - at a quick sprint. It was quite an amazing read, especially for somebody without too much prior knowledge of the subject, as I think that the pace kept presenting a long series of interesting facts and comments.
I was able to brush up on my ancient school knowledge and added a few previously unknown facts.
Having reached the end, I think that I would be inclined to dig much further into the whole topic and reference to 'England - A History" gives you plenty of places to introduce you to the various times and events.
A great read.
